Tony is a renowned Professor of Organic Chemistry at Imperial College (IC), London. He is known for his groundbreaking research on the synthesis of complex organic molecules. Currently, he is emeritus professor of organic chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at IC.
He was the Sir Derek Barton Professor of Synthetic Chemistry and the Glaxo Professor of Organic Chemistry at IC. He co-authored 441 publications, is the co-inventor on 38 patent applications and issued patents, and he has given over 572 invited and plenary lectures at conferences, universities, and corporations in 28 countries. His areas of research have been in synthetic and medicinal chemistry, namely (1) the development of synthetic organic methodology, (2) the total syntheses of bioactive natural products, (3) the design of new methods for the catalysis of organic transformations, (4) cancer medicinal chemistry, and in (5) studies on coordination inorganic chemistry.
